John and John became best friends through their training and travels with gymnastics. They have combined their passion for the sport and their desire to give back to younger gymnasts by joining forces for Flip Fest.
I have been having a great time in Virginia the last few days. Last weekend I hung out with the best boys in the state, at the Virginia Boy's State Meet, hosted by Youth Sports Training Center. I want to thank Doug Lubking, the Virginia State Director for boys, and all the parents and coaches from Youth Sports Training Center for all there help and for allowing me to hang out for the weekend. You all did a great job with the meet.
I had a blast with all the coaches and kids. I saw some pretty studly boys doing some good stuff. I had a good time seeing some familiar faces and meeting some new ones. I had the opportunity to meet Helena, the owner of Youth Sports. She has had quite a legacy in the sport of gymnastics. She's been involved in the sport for about 55 years and has done an amazing job, and she is still out there coaching the boys and even spotting double backs.
After leaving the State Meet I headed north about 20 minutes to our nations capitol, Washington DC. I didn't realize how close I was, so I thought I would take the opportunity to do a little sightseeing before I met up with my former teammate and Olympic silver medalist Jair Lynch, who lives in DC. What an amazing city. So much history and really the heart beat of our country and even much of the world. It really has an aura about it.
After saying hi to Lincoln, Washington and Jefferson, I caught up with my good friend Jair. He has his own company in DC now and is a very successful Real Estate Developer. It was great seeing him.
There was not much time to rest. I got up Monday and first headed to Capitol Gymnastics. Home of World Champion Ashley Postell and also many great male gymnasts. It was good to talk with Carlos, the head boys coach, and Sergio, who runs the gym and is very involved with Power Tumbling and Trampoline. I told him my brother Gus is making a comeback this year and to keep an eye on him for me.
From Capitol I headed over to Northern Virginia Gymnastics Academy, owned by Mike Comini. Mike had asked me to come to the gym sometime back so I decided to coordinate my trip the State Meet with a visit to his gym. I had the pleasure of talking to all the kids and then hanging out and watching their workout, and yes, even working out a little bit myself. Don't worry I didn't do anything exciting, and I am still sore today. I really enjoyed working with everyone and getting to know you all a bit. A note to Linda, keep letting go on that flyaway, Spencer, keep working hard and Peter, glad I could be there for your first giant on high bar. And to everyone, keep up the great work and keep having fun with gymnastics. You have a great place to train and a great staff.
Mike, I had to put up a picture of our jam session. Although I don't think they call what I was doing Jamming. I promise next time I will know more than one chord, and we will have to go out somewhere so I can watch you play live. Also, I am going to be ready for the old timers meet next year, so let me know when it is. Macready doesn't know it yet, but he's coming too. We better start training now, it will take that long to get in shape.
So the day after visiting Mike and all the kids at NVGA, I stopped by and visited my friend Jason Furr and his boys team at Apollo Gymnastics. It was great hanging out and catching up with Jason. He was an amazing gymnast and now is doing a great job with his boys. He has some pretty amazing guys. I hope we can get Jason to camp this summer. He would amaze the campers with some of the stuff he can still do.
From there I headed south. The next day I visited Barb and her girls at Roanoke Gymnastics. It was my first trip to Roanoke, and it was nice to meet some new coaches and gymnasts. They have a big team and some good girls. Congrats to Emily on joining the team at Illinois State. I look forward to coming back and visiting you all again.
From there I headed back up north and visited my friends the Gammas at Classics Gymnastics in Charlottesville. It was good to see a lot of familiar faces. It was nice to catch up with Joe and Diana. Thanks for letting me stay over, although I think Deja (their dog) almost gave me heart failure when she had a nightmare. Andrew we are looking forward to having you at camp. I am going to go ahead and tell everyone that you are planning on cooking all week. The staff will be very excited.
For my last day in Virginia, I started by heading out to Virginia Beach to visit Gymstrada. I got a little side tracked when I saw the sign for Colonial Williamsburg so I stopped. I didn't realize that the College of William and Mary is there. It's beautiful. I tried to find the gymnastics gym, but ran out of time. But I did find a building that was named after my dog Tucker. I didn't realize how famous he really is.
On my way to Gymstrada, I stopped at Excalibur Gymnastics to say hi to Jim Walker. He has a very high level girls team, and has had someone on the National team every year since about 1994. Pretty amazing record. It was fun to talk to him and see his facility. From there it was off to Gymstrada. I saw most of the boys when I was up at the State Meet last weekend, but it was good to see them and their coach, Mike Worth and to meet some of the girls team. Some of the boys, and possibly some of the girls, are coming to camp this summer, including Trevor, one of their top dogs.
Last but not least on my list of stops was the Lubkings up in Richmond at GymQuest. I had a chance to talk to some of the kids and parents a bit and even got up on the high bar again. Yes, that's twice in one week. It may be the last time however, because Doug Lubking borrowed my grips for a turn and I think they grew a couple inches. Nice giants though Doug.
It was a blast hanging out in Virginia for the week. It is a really beautiful state, and trust me I saw most of it. I look forward to coming back again, if I'm still welcome. This weekend it's off to Chatanooga for the Tennessee State Meet.
