John and John became best friends through their training and travels with gymnastics. They have combined their passion for the sport and their desire to give back to younger gymnasts by joining forces for Flip Fest.
John and I rocked it out at the American Cup this past weekend. John was, as always, the best host at the meet. Ok, so he was the only host at the meet, but he was still awesome. I was working for NBC, but only in the production truck this time. It was fun but hopefully I will get another chance to broadcast again.
Nastia Liukin Cup was on Friday and there was some great talent at the meet. Lake Frances Adventure camper Lexie Priessman, from CGA, took the all-around. She was phenomenal. Actually I think it was easier for her to win that meet than it was for her to get through the ropes course. This was a pretty cool meet and it is great to see Nastia so eager to give back to the sport. She is an awesome role model.
The American Cup as always was very good for the Americans. Rebecca Bross dominated the women's side to take the gold and Jonathan Horton, one of our favorite Flip Fest special guests, almost took the gold for the men, but had a slip up on the p-bars and ended up second. It was very exciting. We hope you all watched it live on NBC.
We got to see a lot of our favorite camp coaches and special guests. Including Nastia, Mary Lee Tracy, Jonathan Horton, Jessica Lopez, from Venezuela (she was 3rd), Oliver Macready was even there. Keep an eye out for Oliver. He is starring in a Hardee's/Carl's Junior commercial. I tell you what, our Flip Fest staff is everywhere. Nastia is hoping to come and visit us twice this year, so keep an eye on our website for when she is coming.
Camp's filling up, so I hope you all are getting those registrations in and you are getting excited. It's gonna be an awesome summer.
Wow what a time we had in Florida!!! For the last two weeks Lacy, the kids and I having been traveling Florida! We went to some great meets and some great gyms. The trip started off at the Sand Dollar Meet at Disney Wide World of Sports. Ella hung with me the whole time while Lacy took Hudson fishing for the first time. Ella wanted to take all the princesses home with her but she finally decided on a Tyrannosaurus rex from “build a dino”. They didn’t have “build a princess”. As you can see Hudson caught his first fish and it’s a big one!
After Sand Dollar I drove down to Cooper City FL to visit Stu and his crew at Park Ave Gymnastics. Stu thanks for the amazing grilled steaks!! I then headed up to Ocala FL where I got to hang with my friends at Balcony Gymnastics. Some of my other stops included, Fit Club Gymnastics in Orange City, Gymnastics Plus where Head Coach Steve Arkell took me Paddle Boarding. Wow, surfing on a paddleboard is a lot of fun. I then shot over to Jacksonville where I stopped by and saw our friends at North Florida Gymnastics and TNT Gymnastics. We finished up our time in Florida at Ace Gymnastics’ Daytona Beach Meet. A cold and windy front came through Florida, but the kids still got to walk the beach.
Like I said, what a trip! It was so great seeing everyone and I want to thank you all for your hospitality!
Wow Lake Frances is frozen over! I have never seen this since we have owned the lake. I took Ella, Hudson, Rosco and Vince Walker out for a little walk today and we had a blast. Don't worry we checked it out really good before we walked on it! It's around 5 inches thick! John and I are going to see if we can do this during summer for you guys as an activity. We are checking into lake freezers as we speak. Sorry, I just got word that there is no such thing. That's too bad because it would be so fun, haha. Well I hope you guys are having a great season. If you are going to our Flip Fest Invitational this weekend we will see you there! Don't worry we have warmer weather coming our way for this weekend. Thank you God!
It's the most wonderful time of the year! Happy holidays campers. We hope you are all doing well and training hard. We got news that Flip Fest finished 3rd in raising money for the Children's Miracle Network this year out of everyone in the country. Way to go campers! You raised a total of $14,318.75. So far Flip Fest campers, you have raised about $50,000 for this great cause to help children less fortunate. You all should be very proud.
We have been busy at camp. We just finished our last retreat of the year and we also had a very successful Fall Adventure Camp. We had all the top dogs of the coaching world in to work with the coaches and gymnasts and I'm not talking about Tucker and Rosco. Mary Lee Tracy, Tammy Biggs, Svetlana Boguinskaya and Chris Burdette were all here working hard. If you couldn't make it this year, we hope to see you next time. We may be moving to two weekends next year so there will be more opportunity to for you all to make it.
So December is upon us and the optional season is just around the corner. If you have your compulsory state meet this weekend, good luck. We know you'll finish strong. We will be seeing many of you very soon. Randy is going to be visiting 3 meets this month and Johnny r will be up at The Cup again this year in Cincinnati at the end of the month. Be sure to come and say hi. See you all soon!
I hope everyone is having a great fall and is gearing up for the competitive season if you’re not already in it. The Flip Fest family is starting to hit the road and I’m sure we’ll see a lot of you very soon. Phil Kingsley, Meaghan Ruppert and I took a quick trip up to Jody’s Gymnastics Zone in Columbus Indiana to visit Ben, Angela and the whole team for a couple days. It was awesome. Phil and I coached the gymnasts a bit and of course had to mix in a few games at the end. It was a blast. They’ve got a pretty good team and they were a lot of fun to work with. Glad to see the gym has dried out and things are going well.
I talked to Randy Parrish and he’s all jazzed up to hit the road and see you all this season. He will be up at Lakeshore Gymnastics to visit Rob Surber and the crew the first weekend in November. Lookout Lakshoreans, you can’t stop him, you can only hope to contain him. He’s the fun master, Randy Parrish!
We are very excited about the Fall Adventure Camp, which is coming up November 13th – 15th at Lake Frances. It’s already packed and we have our great clinicians and judges coming back again as well as some of Mary Lee Tracy’s Elite gymnasts that will be attending. It should be awesome.
The whole crew, that being, John, John, Phil, Brian, Osh, Lacy, Ginger, Meaghan and Randy will all be in Nashville this weekend for the Intrigue Invite, which is one of our favorite stops of the year. This is an awesome meet and the best way to kick off our travel season. The Intrigue Invite, is hosted by Ginger Raines’s gym Intrigue Athletics and is held at the awesome Opryland Hotel. If you’ve never been you have to make it a stop on your schedule next year. I just have to remind Johnny Mac to not swim in the fountains. It’s not Lake Frances!
Speaking of Johnny Mac and the family. I am very worried about them. In fact, I am not sure what happened to them. Evidently, they have disappeared and in their place have moved in the Clampets from the Beverly Hillbillies. The reason I believe this to be the case is that two pigmy goats have taken up residence near what was once the Macready home. The goats are evidently named Pearl and Shirley, after Minnie Pearl from the hit show Hee Haw and Shirley from the equally intellectually stimulating show, Luverne and Shirley. That is all the information I could glean from the strange woman who reminded me somewhat of Lacy Macready but I assumed had to be Granny Clampet. I couldn’t understand much of what she said but evidently she spoke fluent Goateneese as her and Pearl carried on a conversation which I gathered had something to do with how much goat cheese to sprinkle on Lacy’s, I mean, Granny’s possum soup.
Anyways, if anyone can help me with this situation I would much appreciate it. Camp is going to be tough without John and Lacy around this year. On a positive note, we may have two new camp mascots for this coming summer. Roscoe and Tucker may be in trouble. I wonder if Pearl can sing Happy Birthday?
John comes from a gymnastics family. His dad Fred was a gymnast and a member of the 1968 Olympic Team which competed in Mexico City. Fred was the head coach of the men's team at the University of Minnesota from 1971 through 2004. His sister Marie was a member of the 1984 Olympic Team which competed in Los Angeles. John was a member of the USA National Team from 1988 through 2000. He was a member of six World Championship Teams and a member of the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Olympic Teams. John is one of the most accomplished male gymnasts in American history.
John attended the University of Minnesota where he received a double major in International Business and Finance and a minor in Speech Communications. Athletically, John rewrote the collegiate record books by winning four Big Ten all-around titles and three NCAA all-around titles. He is the only gymnast in history to accomplish both. He has stayed closely involved with collegiate gymnastics as a judge, coach and fundraiser.
John has remained involved in the sport of gymnastics since his retirement from competition in 2000. He has worked as a performer, commentator, coach, judge, athlete representative for the current U.S. National Teams and is a member of the Board of Directors for USA Gymnastics. Over the last four years, John has worked extensively with USA Gymnastics in promoting their events to the media and member clubs across the country.
John started attending summer gymnastics camps in 1992 as a coach and special guest. Since that time, he has regularly attended a variety of camps across the nation. He has been involved primarily in the coaching and promotional aspects of the camps. In 2005, he partnered with John Macready, and they have worked ever since to make Flip Fest the top resort summer camp in the country.
